#PLEX ON MAC MINI LINUX PLUS#
For the price of the NUC plus required peripherals I can buy the Mac Mini plus 4tb of external storage split across two drives.1. Plex can play video as well as audio, I don't see how this is a pain in the arse, to be honest. It has plenty of power to do the job I want it to do. I would also point out that "Underpowered" is wrong in respect of the Mac Mini. It'll need 2 connections - 1 for power, and 1 to carry opti-out to my DAC/Pre. The Mac Mini will basically do what I need to do for half the price of a solution based on the NUC you suggested. Add the necessary £70ish for those items and the NUC is suddenly £100 more, and looks like a psychotic cyber-squid with all the bits hanging off. Because I also want to add 2 external USB drives for additional storage I'd also have to add a powered USB hub (for the setup at least). In order to do what I need I'd have to add on a USB to digital out device (I'd probably go with the Behringer C222, having used the 202 inthe past), and also a usb CD drive for the ripping.

Perhaps terming what I want to do as a "server" is open to too much interpretation - I want to rip, store and play music. I grind no axe either way, but as a bang per buck the Mac Mini still looks to be the better basic all in one box solution for what I want to do. Intel NUC D54250WYK Mini Compact PC, i5-4250U, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD, WiFiĬlick to expand.Nice, but no digital audio out. Here fo instance for circa 30 quid more is an nuc with a core i5 processor: 2010 was 11 years ago, that in compute terms is geriatric.

IN terms of setting up servers etc, its just as complicated or easy on PC as it is on mac depending on your skill set, your assumed reasons for prefering a mac dont stack up when it comes to being a server.įill your boots either way its going to work, but mac mini offers no advantages and is expensive. For that you want an ATV or Shield or something. Also bear in mind that for a home theatre set up it is far far from ideal, infact its a right royal pain in the arse. I am not dissing a mac mini, but even though its 'cheap' its still very expensive, and for the same money you could get a more modern NUC for instance that is faster. Most every PC this past 15 years has HDMI out
